Legacy of the XI century Cistercian Monks

The Cariñena terroirs have been cared for by many winegrowers over the centuries including the Cistercian monks. In the eleventh century they built a monastery in a bountiful region, known as the Sierra de Aguarón, and there they kept the traditional practices of winemaking that date back to pre-Roman times. The fame of the monk’s wines spread beyond the region known for the stones that protect the moisture levels of the vines. The land has an enviable wine climate and sloping terrain that allows the earth to drain naturally. Vineyards starting at an altitude of 600m mark the ideal starting point for Monasterio de las Viñas wines. It is a wine born from care of the earth; made with indigenous and traditional varieties from the region, in order to nurture the best in each grape. Each vintage demonstrates the wisdom of the past mixed with the richness of the present. A tribute to the exchange of knowledge between the hundreds of monasteries in which they safeguarded the secrets of wine-making. While integrating in the contributions of winemakers from other world regions with new ways of enriching each harvest, the essence of the earth and the legacy have remained intact.
